Beginning Dance - This class encourage children to explore movement and discover their potential in a positive and happy environment.  Students tell stories through movement; explore the dance elements of shape, time, space, and energy; and practice basic motor skills.  This is an excellent and interesting approach to prepare children for future technical training in dance and/or sports.  Emphasis is on individual development and creativity.  1/2 hour

Pre-Technique- This class is designed to prepare the young dancer for the more technically demanding Ballet, Jazz, Modern and Tap classes.  Students explore the dance elements of shape, time, space, and energy in more depth and are offered a structured base to practice basic motor skills, develop rhythm, and learn basic moves of ballet, jazz, modern and tap techniques.   3/4 hour

Pre-Ballet- This class is an introduction to classical ballet provides students with sound technical training while developing a love and appreciation of this beautiful art for all students.  Exercises at the barre and in the center develop strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, self-discipline, and a keen sense of body-awareness.   Class is taught in French vocabulary with classical music.  3/4 hour

Ballet —Classical ballet is the foundation of all dance forms and therefore most important in dance education.  It is strongly recommended for all students.  Exercises at the barre and in the center develop strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, self-discipline, and a keen sense of body-awareness.  A contemporary understanding of anatomy and kinesiology is combined with practice of the classical form.  This class provides students with sound technical training as well as an interesting and expressive workout.  Class is taught in French vocabulary with classical music.  1 hour, 1 1/4 hours, or 1 1/2 hours

Pointe—Pointe classes are for those students who have developed the necessary physical and technical readiness.  Requirements include enrollment in at least one high-level ballet class and an invitation from the director.  1/2 hour

Modern —Modern is a contemporary form of dance combining many dance forms including ballet, jazz, and various ethnic styles.  It began as a rebellion from classical dance and has developed into an exciting, eclectic art form which emphasizes the body’s natural movement patterns and individual creativity.  Modern dance technique develops strength, coordination, flexibility, and stamina through floor and center exercises and large movement combinations.  In addition, the intellectual and creative processes of the dancers are enhanced by movement problem-solving and analysis. 1 or 1 1/4 hour

Jazz/Hip Hop —Jazz is a stylized dance form accompanied by contemporary music.  This class features a technical warm-up, center isolations, floor and/or barre stretch, and larger movement combinations.  Previous ballet training is strongly recommended. 3/4 or 1 hour

Tap- The study of tap is a fascinating exploration of rhythms and sounds made by the feet.  This class features a technical warm-up, tap movements through space, and graded learning of tap steps.  1/2 or 3/4 hour

Performance Ensemble—Academy of Dance has its own performance ensemble for ages nine and up that rehearses weekly and performs around the community throughout the year.  To participate one must be registered for at least two technique classes (one of which must be ballet) and commit to attend all weekly rehearsals and performances.  The start-up costume fee is $75 the first year; other costume costs may arise.  1 hour
